Are Yous Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Review

Well, are you?

Quiz bear witness games would seem to be a perfect fit for Xbox Live Arcade. Afterwards all, trivia games are a communal event. And Xbox Live is all almost bringing people together. Recognizing the potential, THQ is trying to capitalize on a relatively untapped XBLA genre with Are You Smarter Than a fifth Grader. But this bare-basic trivia title misses the mark, failing to be peculiarly challenging or fun.
Based on the pop TV show, fifth Grader has y'all answering a series of questions the average fifth grader should know on the way to winning a million dollars. And by winning a meg dollars, I mean winning an imaginary meg dollars that you tin can't have with you lot. Subsequently all, this is a videogame you're playing. Yous will not compensate the $15 spent.

As with the Boob tube testify, Jeff Foxworthy is the virtual host for the XBLA version of fifth Grader. He'southward decently rendered, though there'south something a little off about his face up. Then again, that may simply be Jeff Foxworthy. Information technology'south the fictional students -- who help yous cheat on your examination -- who need some work. Each looks a tad creepy. I would not want to run across these 5th graders in a dark aisle.

The quiz board features a range of topics. There are 2 questions for each grade level, from kickoff on upward to fifth course. Yous choice from i of five students to help you on 2 questions apiece. You have 3 cheats -- peek, copy or save. Peek lets you look at the respond from your chosen classmate, copy has you blindly accepting their respond, and save is used if yous miss a question. On an incorrect reply, your classmate's response is shown. If they get it correct, you lot are saved, earn some greenbacks and motion on. Information technology's a swell help, but call back that you only have one of each crook.

Unlike the Goggle box show, the questions on the board are all multiple choice. At worst, yous will have four answers to choose from. This makes getting to the large million dollar question a lot easier. You tin can usually eliminate at least one answer. That puts yous at three choices. From at that place, if you yet don't know, y'all could make a lucky (or educated) approximate. And the cheats are very helpful, since the AI classmates are selecting from just four options. To its credit, 5th Grader forces you to type in the answer to the million dollar question (and no cheats are immune). Getting to the big question is pretty easy. Answering information technology, non so much.

The questions in 5th Grader are completely uneven. There are first-grade questions -- supposedly softballs -- that are harder than fifth course questions. And the kids, who have their own expertise, seem to be incorrect more than right.

At whatsoever point, when you encounter a question y'all don't know the answer to, yous tin can drop out of class and keep what y'all earned. Just this isn't real life. You don't lose money, you don't win coin. Since at that place's no collective stat on what yous've earned, there's never a reason to driblet out. Simply button forward.

But the real downfall of fifth Grader is the piss-poor multiplayer. Trivia games are best when a grouping can relish information technology together. Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? has one multiplayer mode -- and it'due south not very adept. Whether online or offline, each actor plays their own game of 5th Grader. After each question, the adjacent person takes their turn. Y'all have your own category and questions. It's multiplayer because, well, you lot have to await on someone else to make their manner through their own game, I approximate. Whoever finishes with the most money, wins. Whoever plays this more than than once loses.

Are You Smarter than a fifth Grader? makes a worthy attempt at doing trivia correct. Though it ultimately fails, it doesn't seem as if this was a game just thrown together. Work was put into 5th Grader, only it falls short of other quiz games on Xbox 360. If you're truly smarter than a fith grader, you'll pass on this game.
